Swimming in Code

Today started out at 4AM when I couldn’t sleep. I’m not having the pain levels that I did at the end of last year, but the aching and tingling is still enough to keep me awake when I’m not exhausted. So, rather than lie in bed, I’d just as soon get up and get to work.

Today’s main project was to merge together five branches of code on a project we picked up from some other contractors. There were a ton of loose ends, and it was time to just sit down and tidy as well as possible. I managed to pull it off, but there was a long grueling day of going through code that I only half understood on the way.

I was back and forth to the kitchen a few times in the morning, roasting a chicken for lunch, which was our big meal today. I brined the whole thing for a few hours and it turned out quite well.

In the afternoon, I took a break to take Adam over to the Y, where his Webelos den (and the other Webelos den from his pack) were in the pool for their “aquanaut” badge. He wasn’t the strongest swimmer there or the weakest, but he did his best and tried everything the coaches asked of him, which is all we ask either.

Back home, Adam was very excited about the Super Bowl, because there was junk food involved. He helped put out some of the snacky stuff and then watched a little bit of the game. Dana had a friend over for her annual football game as well. Personally, I put on headphones and went back into the code. We didn’t really have dinner, just continued snacks for everyone.

I finally got through the big code job after another break to put kids to bed. Then I had two other projects to deploy code on from subcontractors, and a couple of progress reports to write, before I finally crashed myself.
