More Management (Wednesday, August 11, 2010)

Managed to have a day completely at home today, which I was more than ready for. Of course I didn’t spend it relaxing or anything – it was primarily a project management day, with lots of time on the phone (I think I need to get a phone with a stronger battery) and a few odd moments of writing code.

Art and Glasses (Tuesday, August 10, 2010)

Today was Dana’s birthday, so we started with hugs, celebrations, and presents. After that, she took the kids out to IHOP for their share of birthday food, and I buckled down to work. Spent the morning catching up on email and writing code, and made some progress, though troublesome project is still troublesome.

Pre-birthday dinner (Monday, August 9, 2010)

Well, it was definitely Monday. I was on the go pretty constantly up until dinner time, writing code, coordinating other devs, and taking a few client phone calls. I did take Kayla out long enough to make a bank deposit and shop for her brother’s upcoming birthday, but otherwise I was lashed to my desk.

Code (Sunday, August 8, 2010)

Kept on cranking through code today. The major problem was to track down a large performance issue in searching a big Postgres database; after much pain (and far too much work) it proved that the code we were using to do the querying was just wrong. I rewrote it and life was much better, but the net result was to lose two days out of a schedule that was already struggling.

Scouting Expo (Saturday, August 7, 2010)

This morning Adam, Thomas, and I all got on our Cub Scout uniforms and headed out to the local mall, where we met up with other folks from our pack for the 100th anniversary of Scouting expo put on by the Council. There wasn’t a whole lot there, but we strolled around for an hour or so and saw the exhibits, and the boys had some fun. Then we stopped by the Scout store on the way home to pick up a few missing uniform bits.

Been Busy (Friday, August 6, 2010)

We’ve had a couple of frustrating parenting days; homeschool is not always the funnest thing in the world. But we took another crack at it this morning. It’s not like letting them be ignorant is an option. Things went OK, though there’s still room for improvement.

More of the Same (Monday, August 2, 2010)

Back to school Mondays are always fun when they’ve had a week off. Today went reasonably well – we kept the work light – except that Adam was pushing back pretty hard. He’s a smart boy but sometimes would prefer not to exercise his brain. In any case, we got through.

Easy Day (Sunday, August 1, 2010)

Today was a mix of coding and bookkeeping – and waiting for sleeping-in kids to wake up. I was off and running at my usual early hour (around 5:30 these days, so not all that early), but most of the kids had the sense to sleep later.

Code and Birthday (Saturday, July 31, 2010)

Got an early start this morning with a bug that I thought was only going to take 30 minutes or so to fix. By the time the dust cleared, I was 4 hours into it, and lunch was approaching. So much for my ability to estimate software projects.

Busy (Friday, July 30, 2010)

The last few days have just been a blur of driving kids around and working. Today was a little different – it was a blur of driving kids around and catching up on email. The ship pressure remains high, and the big codebase is still being difficult, so a lot of other things – like keeping this journal up to date – have been slipping.
